A brief history of interesting steps

" 1873 "
The first (of many) clubs established in the Hawthorn area.

" 1902 "
Club proper established.

" 1904 "
George M. Cohen writes his song 'The Yankee Doodle Boy' - which is later used for our theme song.

" 1914 "
Joins the VFA and changes their colours to Brown with a Gold 'V'.

" 1925 "
Joins the VFL.

" 1933 "
Temporarily inverts it's jumper to be Gold with a Brown 'V' and are referred to as the "mustard pots".

" 1943 "
Roy Cazaly (Coach) changes the Club from the "Mayblooms" to the "Hawks".

" 1950 "
The guernsey changes from a 'V' to vertical stripes.

" 1956 "
Chick Lander (Club lawyer) and Jack O'Hagan (singer) come up with our theme song (to the tune of 'The Yankee Doodle Boy').

" 1957 "
First finals appearance (a win over Carlton).

" 1961 "
First Grand Final win (over Footscray).

" 1963 "
The first time we finish on top of the ladder.

" 1965 "
Our 11th, and hopefully last ever, wooden spoon.

" 1973 "
Last game played at Glenferrie Oval.

" 1995 "
The infamous Blue Diamond pre-season guernsey. Worst jumper ever.

" 1996 "
Failed merger attempt with the Melbourne Demons.

" 2022 "
AFLW side officially starts.
